Ergonomic Testing

The project began with a series of ergonomic tests to determine the optimal height, angle of the back, and seat placement, as well as the back's placement. 

Inspiration

I wanted to take wood, which is often solid and rigid, and manipulate it so it behaved like upholstery. I looked at existing ways of cutting wood and construction methods to achieve this.

Choosen Concept

The chosen concept is a chair with a walnut frame, featuring a seat and back made of tiles arranged in a checkerboard pattern. By stringing the tiles together, the seat and back will be able to flex with the user, providing optimal comfort.

Building Process: Frame

The walnut frames and supports where CNCed glued, sanded, and finished over the course of two weeks.

Building Process: Tiles

Over a 100 maple, cherry, and walnut tiles where hand cut, drilled, sanded, and  finished.  A mix of 73 where chosen to be strung together for the seat and back of Checkered.
