My Goal

I wanted to take wood, which is often solid and rigid, and manipulate it so it behaved like upholstery. 

Ergonomic Testing

The project began with a series of ergonomic tests to determine the optimal height, angle of the back, and seat placement, as well as the back's placement.

Frame

The walnut frames and supports were cut on a CNC machine, then glued, sanded, and finished over two weeks.

Over 100 maple, cherry, and walnut tiles were hand-cut, drilled, sanded, and  finished.  A mix of 73 where chosen to be strung together for the seat and back of Checkered.
